E-Learner Permit Knowledge Test
Step 1: Study for the Test
The learner permit knowledge test consists of 32 questions, which you’ll complete on a computer at a VicRoads Customer Service Centre. To pass, you need to answer at least 25 questions correctly, achieving a pass rate of 78%. A successful test result remains valid for 10 years for learner permit holders and 12 months for overseas license holders.
Before taking the test, you must be at least 16 years old. You can book your learner permit test in advance.
To prepare for the test, make sure to review the latest edition of the Road to Solo Driving handbook thoroughly. The test questions are based on all four chapters of the handbook. You can also practice online for free to familiarize yourself with the format.
Step 2: Book and Pay for Your Test
You can schedule and pay for your learner knowledge test through the following methods:
- Online: Visit VicRoads website using a valid Mastercard or Visa.
- By Phone: Call 13 11 71 and use a valid Mastercard or Visa.
- In Person: Visit any VicRoads Customer Service Centre (locations are listed in the Road to Solo Driving hand book).
Required Documents for Booking:
Make sure to bring:
- A ‘Category A’ identity document (e.g., Australian birth certificate or passport).
- A ‘Category B’ identity document (e.g., Australian bank statement, student ID, or Medicare card).
- Proof of your current address (if not included in the Category A or B documents).
Step 3: Complete the Learner Permit Application Form
Fill out the application form for your learner permit before heading to VicRoads.
Step 4: Take the Tests at VicRoads
Tests to Complete:
- Knowledge Test: This takes approximately 10–30 minutes.
- Eyesight Test: A quick 5-minute assessment.
Documents to Bring on Test Day:
- Your unsigned learner permit application form.
- One ‘Category A’ identity document (e.g., Australian birth certificate or passport).
- One ‘Category B’ identity document (e.g., Australian bank statement, student ID, or Medicare card).
- Proof of your current address (if not shown on the Category A or B documents)
Note: Without the required documents, you won’t be able to take the tests.
Step 5: Pay for Your Learner Permit Card
After passing the tests, you’ll be issued a Victorian learner permit. Visit a VicRoads Customer Service Centre to complete this step and officially receive your learner permit.
