Living in Victoria for 6 Months or More
If you plan to live in Victoria for 6 months or longer, you’ll need to convert your overseas licence or permit to a Victorian licence.
The type of licence or permit you’ll receive, as well as the tests and appointments required, will depend on:
- The country where your licence or permit was issued.
- Your age.
- The length of time you’ve held your licence (this does not include learner permits).
Visiting for Less Than 6 Months
If you’re visiting Victoria for less than 6 months, there’s no need to convert your overseas licence or permit.
You can drive in Victoria using your overseas licence or learner permit, provided you follow all applicable road rules and laws.

- Your overseas licence must be current and valid.
- If your overseas licence is not in English, you must carry an English translation or an international driving permit when driving.
- An international driving permit must:
- Be carried alongside your overseas licence.
- Be issued by the same country as your licence.
- Comply with the United Nations convention for international driving permits.
- Be written in English
Driving with an Overseas Learner Permit
If you’re using an overseas learner permit, you must have a supervising driver seated beside you. The supervising driver must hold a current and full licence for the type of vehicle you’re operating.
